The SUNY Potsdam athletic facilities are centered around and within Maxcy Hall. The multi-million dollar facility was built in 1971 and has undergone several major revisions since then. It is considered one of the finest sports complexes in the country.
At the heart of Maxcy is the Bears' 2,500-seat ice arena, as well as the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium, which seats 3,600 people. Maxcy also houses a natatorium with swimming pool/diving well and a 33,000 square foot field house complete with an indoor track, basketball, volleyball and indoor lacrosse courts.
On the building’s third floor is the 8,000 square foot Shane T. Shaul Fitness Center, which was completely remodeled in the fall of 2009 with $300,000 worth of treadmills, spin cycles, ellipticals, strength equipment and free weights.
Fifty acres of athletic fields surround Maxcy, including the recently-built, all-weather Astroturf field. The turf field serves as the home for Bears soccer and lacrosse events.
A new women's softball field was also recently added, while the tennis courts have been completely remodeled to include lights and a new court surface. A quarter-mile track sits just beside the turf field.
Maxcy Hall is the center of the sports world here on campus. It’s a modern facility that’s got it all, including these other features:
• 50-foot rock climbing wall, full high ropes course and bouldering cave
• 33,000 square-foot field house, complete with indoor track, basketball, volleyball and indoor lacrosse courts
• 6 racquetball courts and 3 squash courts
• Dance studio
• Physical therapy/training room
