George Eastman was one of Potsdam’s first outstanding athletes, playing basketball and baseball while attending Potsdam Normal School in 1904 and 1905.

Eastman was captain and center for the Potsdam basketball team in 1904 and 1905 as the team posted a two-year mark of 15-3. He was also captain of the 1905 basketball team that lost only one game.

Following his graduation from Normal School, Eastman went to Clarkson, where he captained the Knights’ first-ever ice hockey team.

Eastman proved to be a standout even after his athletic career. After moving to California, where he was director of the state’s Chamber of Commerce, Eastman was honored as Los Angeles’ “most useful citizen” in 1928. He served as a trustee of Pomona College and was awarded Japan’s Order of the Rising of the Sun in 1965, a year before he received an honorary doctorate from Clarkson.

Eastman died in 1969.
