When Potsdam College won its first basketball championship in 1963, Coach Lou LaGrand telephoned college president Frederick Crumb to relay the news.

“Dr. Crumb,” he said, “Albany State scored 40 points and we scored 49.” Lou burst into laughter at the President’s response and Potsdam began its jubilant celebration.

Lou LaGrand brought honor and prestige to the Potsdam College physical education staff. He coached the first Potsdam team ever to appear in an NCAA regional tournament. He is one of only two coaches in the state university system to have teams win both a state university tournament and a state university conference championship. He published numerous articles on basketball, including “Coach’s Complete Guide to Winning Basketball.”

LaGrand earned his bachelor’s in education from Cortland State in 1957. He received an M.A. in guidance from University of Notre Dame, an M.A. from Columbia University and his Ph. D from the Florida State University.

LaGrand expanded his area of scholarship with research in death education and counseling. He devoted his career to enhancing the quality of life and the quality of education for young people throughout St. Lawrence County and at Potsdam College.

With deep honor, Potsdam College inducts Dr. Lou Lagrand into the Sports Hall of Fame.
