Roosevelt “Pony” Bullock came to Potsdam out of Syracuse Nottingham High School, where he also won the New York State high school championship. As the point guard for the SUNY Potsdam men’s basketball team, Bullock led the Bears’ renowned fast break and spearheaded their trademark pressure defense.
“Pony Bullock was a tremendous all-around player and great leader,” former Potsdam coach Jerry Welsh said. “He was completely unselfish and never cared about individual goals. He was a role model for all our players and developed into a complete player.”
Bullock was named a first-team All-American following the team’s memorable 1985-86 season, and was part of three regional championship teams. During his four-year career (1982-86), the Bears compiled a 107-17 record. He was captain of the 1985-86 undefeated national championship team during the program’s championship run in the decade of the ‘80s.
Roosevelt graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 1987 with a bachelor’s in psychology. He currently resides in Syracuse, where he is an intake counselor with the New York State Office of Children’s & Family Service. Roosevelt is also active in the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club.
