Box Score CANTON, N.Y. - Senior Cortney Poirier's goal with 10.8 seconds remaining in the first half proved to be the game-winner for the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team, which defeated Canton 3-0 Tuesday night in the first-ever Boyd Jones Memorial Cup contest between the North Country rivals.

Freshman Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) added two goals for the Bears (9-4), who recorded their eighth shutout in nine non-conference contests.

Poirier (Moira, N.Y.) took a long pass from junior Emily Doyle (Saranac Lake, N.Y.), outran two defenders to the ball and calmly finished after beating the goalkeeper.

"It was a battle today," Potsdam coach Tim Moody said. "Canton made it tough for us. The first goal changed the team talk at halftime. It was a good goal and we didn't give up on it."

Goalkeepers Kim Callahan (Centereach, N.Y.) and Caitlin Titus (Jamesville, N.Y.) combined to hold the Kangaroos (4-5) scoreless.

Following the match, Potsdam captains Kelsey Butz (Schenectady, N.Y.), Alissa Tischler (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Kathleen Frear (Scotia, N.Y.) accepted the Cup from the family of Boyd Jones. A former sports information director at both schools, Jones died unexpectedly at his home in November 2009.

"It's a great evening to do something like this for Boyd," Moody said. "It's a celebration of his life as a worker at both institutions. (Our schools) are so close and we have a lot in common. I think it's good for the area and with all the people who came out tonight they did a great job making it a celebration."

Thayer's first goal came at the 79-minute mark, when she beat a defender to the ball after receiving a long pass overhead from Frear. The forward's second came in the 90th minute off an assist from junior Maggie Malinowski (Livonia, N.Y.).

"Ashley came off the bench like she's done all year and scored another two goals," Moody said. "She's starting to grow up and is starting to understand how she needs to play and how she can be effective to score goals and help the team win."

Potsdam returns to State University of New York Athletic Conference play this Friday, Oct. 8, at New Paltz. Match time is slated for 4 p.m.
