SUNY Potsdam Athletics Cold Weather Policy

Bear Head_Maroon

The following guidelines, as outlined in the 2008 NATA position statement, are what will be used to plan activity depending on the wind chill temperature. Conditions should be constantly re-evaluated for change in risk, including the presence of precipitation. SUNY Potsdam Athletic Trainers will use the weather app and AccuWeather to determine the current temperature and windchill. Outdoor participation is determined by “Real Feel.”
  • 30F and below: Be aware of the potential for cold injury and notify appropriate personnel of the potential.
  • 25F and below: Provide additional protective clothing, cover as much exposed skin as practical, and provide opportunities and facilities for rewarming.
  • 15F and below: Modify activity to limit exposure or to allow more frequent chances to rewarm. Limit outside exposure to 45 min total or two 30 min sessions with a 15 min warming session between.
