Box Score 2 The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team suffered consecutive defeats Saturday at the Union Tournament in Schenectady, N.Y.
After falling 25-12, 25-20, 25-6 against host Union, Potsdam was knocked off by Lasell 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21.
"We need to bring a more consistent effort for an entire match," Potsdam coach Steve Pike said. "Right now we're only good in short stints. We're in need of a little break to figure out how good we're going to be going forward."
Following the tournament, freshman setter
Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team. Blujus posted her first career triple-double on Friday against Skidmore with 23 assists, 10 kills and 20 digs.
BLujus, however, was lost four points into the match against Union with a knee injury. Her playing status for the rest of the season is currently unknown.
With Saturday's losses, the Bears (6-17) finished the tournament with an 0-4 mark.
Potsdam halved a two-sets-to-none deficit against Lasell (8-14) with a third-set victory, but were unable to compete the comeback.
Freshman
Annie Smith (Burke, N.Y.) posted a team-high 16 kills while junior Sam Strader (Watertown, N.Y.) recorded 15 kills and 11 digs. Senior captain
Erica Romaniello (Selden, N.Y.) tallied 17 digs, while setters Hannah Lockwood (Victor, N.Y.) and
Brittany Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y.) registered 19 and 18 assists, respectively.
"We gave away the first two sets with unforced errors, but battled back and settled in," Pike said. "We brought a ton of speed from Annie and Sam at outside hitter. Unfortunately, we were unable to finish."
Against Union (14-9), Smith totaled six kills to lead the Bears, who were unable to regain focus after Blujus went down.
"Losing Jenna was kind of a shell shock for us, and we were unable to recover," Pike said.
The Bears take on William Paterson (11:30 a.m.) and Skidmore (1:30 p.m.) next Saturday at Russell Sage.
