Bears shut out Green Mountain

Box Score Senior Cortney Poirier's unassisted goal in the 67th minute helped the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team pick up a 1-0 victory Monday at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.

Poirier (Moira, N.Y.) scored the game-winner from the wing into the right corner after the ball deflected off a Green Mountain defender.

"We played the ball through to Cortney and she fought off a defender to get free," Potsdam coach Tim Moody said. "She took a shot around the penalty box, and it was headed for the far post, but it deflected off a defender and went inside the near post."

The Bears (5-1) have yet to allow a goal in any of their wins. Sophomore Kim Callahan (Centereach, N.Y.) made three saves at goalkeeper for Potsdam for her second shutout of the year.

Potsdam out-shot the Eagles (1-3) 16-8 in the contest. Poirier tallied six shots, including four on goal, while sophomore Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.), the Bears' leader in goals this season, finished with three shots.

"It was a pretty exciting game," Moody said. "Both teams battled for all 90 minutes. We had a few more clear-cut chances than they did. The hard work and never-say-die attitude paid off in the end."

The game was delayed by one hour due to inclement weather.

Potsdam returns to the field this Wednesday, Sept. 15, at home against Cazenovia. Match time at Maxcy Hall's Turf Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
