Box Score CANTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team posted the first win of its 2010 season, knocking off Canton 2-0 at SUNY Canton Turf Field.
The victory also marked the first at Potsdam for head coach
Adam Parker, who is in his first year at the helm.
The Bears (1-3-1) battled a gritty Canton team and an energetic crowd throughout the game, managing to take advantage of their chances and limit the Kangaroos' opportunities.
"What we wanted to focus on was getting the ball to their end and playing on their end, because so often this year we've played on our own end," Parker said. "It was good to get balls forward and just be dangerous that way."
Potsdam controlled possession in much of the first half, finally striking in the 37th minute as senior
Bobby Kane (Glens Falls, N.Y.) took a pass from senior captain
Tim Ciampa (Castleton, N.Y.). Kane turned in the middle of the box and hooked it past the keeper to the bottom left post.
"The first goal was a great goal," Parker said. "Our guys were playing very direct and then sort of stuck the ball into the midfield. Tim beat a guy, and then Bobby was composed and finished it."
The Bears doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute when junior
Chris Nieves (Saratoga, N.Y.) scored on a header off a free kick from senior
Brandon Calandra (Gloversville, N.Y.).
Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y.) tallied his first shutout of the season with two saves for Potsdam, which out-shot Canton (0-3) 12-3.
The Bears return to action this Saturday, Sept. 18, at Castleton St. to complete a six-match trip away from home. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Castleton, Vt.
