CANTON, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team dropped a difficult match to St. Lawrence in five sets. This was a rematch of the Sept. 13 contest where the Saints won in three, but the Bears would prove they are much improved.
The stands were full as St. Lawrence hosted their “Power of Pink” week to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. The Bears (13-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) would quiet the energetic crowd by winning the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22. However, the momentum would swing in favor of the hosts during the third set which saw St. Lawrence win 25-16. The Bears wouldn't be able to slow down the home team as the Saints would pull out the final two sets by scores of 25-19 and 15-10.
Potsdam was led by senior outside hitter
Samantha Strader who ended the match with 15 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Dakota Pruiss tallied 10 kills and 17 digs and junior
Jillian Dye had 20 digs.
Potsdam head coach Steve Pike wasn't happy with the result but was with the effort.”It was a great match to be a part of but it's frustrating to come out on the losing end,” said Pike. “We played hard but just didn't execute well enough.”
The Bears return to action Friday, Oct. 7 when the travel to Oswego for the Oswego State Invitational. Potsdam will take on Alfred at 4 p.m. and SUNYIT at 6 p.m.
