OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (17-9) rolled to 3-0 victories over Brockport and D'Youville to capture the 2011 Oswego Invitational title. Bears sophomore setter
Jenna Blujus was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In the early match against the Golden Eagles, Potsdam rallied from a late deficit in the first set and never looked back, posting victories of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-16. Senior outside hitter
Samantha Strader led the Bears with 10 kills and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Dakota Pruiss finished with nine kills and junior middle hitter
Kayla Howard added eight kills. Blujus totaled 28 assists, eight digs, and five aces.
“We executed at a high level and had multiple runs against Brockport,” said an excited Potsdam Head Coach Steve Pike. “That was the best we've played in a long time.”
The Bears were just as good against the Spartans, downing D'Youville 25-21, 25-16, and 25-13. Strader matched her early totals with 10 kills and six digs, while Pruiss posted eight kills and eight digs. Howard contributed six kills and junior libero
Jillian Dye had 20 digs and two aces. Blujus capped her MVP performance with 29 assists and three kills.
“Again we had contributions from everyone,” added Pike. “I was very happy with how we competed and executed and Jenna deserved the MVP. She did a great job running our offense.”
Next, Potsdam will face SUNYAC West Rival Fredonia in the first round of the Ithaca Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
