Potsdam handles Cazenovia, 14-5

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team evened its record at 2-2 with a 14-5 home victory over Cazenovia College on Wednesday afternoon. Potsdam junior Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) scored three goals and recorded three assists and senior Samantha Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge contributed two goals and two assists. Junior goalie Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) made five saves to earn the victory for the Bears.

Potsdam built a 7-0 lead in the first half, getting two goals each from Richards and junior Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School). Cazenovia was more competitive in the second half, getting two goals each from senior Nicole Kimmel (Rome, N.Y./RFA) and junior Christy Foster (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams). However, the Bears still outscored the Wildcats 7-5 in the final period to capture the 14-5 win. Senior Kathleen Frear (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored twice in the second half for Potsdam and picked up four ground balls.

The Bears outshot Cazenovia 35-15 and forced 14 of the Wildcats' 28 turnovers.

Milligan started in goal for Potsdam, allowing four goals in 52:25. Freshman goalie Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) played the final 7:35. Junior Aubrey Macintosh (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also scored twice for the Bears.

Sophomore goalie Christina Marra (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) played the entire game for the Cazenovia, making nine saves. Kimmel led the Wildcats with four points (2-goals, two-assists). Foster finished with three points (2-1-3), picked up four ground balls, and caused a game-high six turnovers.

Potsdam Head Coach Lauren Bruce was pleased with how her team finished the victory.

"We recovered from mistakes today. It wasn't very clean in the beginning, but we held our composure in the second half,” said Bruce. “"Kathleen (Frear) was able to slow down Cazenovia's best player off of her transition. Defensively, she does that a lot for us. Aubrey (Macintosh) and Maribeth (Simmons) also played well in transition."

The Bears are off until Tuesday, March 22, when they travel to Canton for a 6 p.m. contest with North Country rival St. Lawrence.
