CANTON, N.Y.--The top-ranked St. Lawrence University Saints (6-0) downed the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team 2-0 this afternoon. Sam DeMello and Brian Gilloran each scored for St. Lawrence.
The Saints took control of the contest early and pressured the Bears in their end for much of game. St. Lawrence outshot Potsdam 16-0 in the first half and generated 10 corner kicks. At the 20:25 mark, Mike Manfredi fed DeMello at the top of the box and DeMello fired a shot past Bears junior goalkeeper Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y./Shaker).
The second half was very similar as the Saints earned six corners and outshot Potsdam 16-2. In the 58th minute, DeMello set up Gilloran to clinch the win for St. Lawrence.
Glackin finished with 12 saves and Saints goalie Brian Abernathy stopped two shots for the shutout.
Bears Head Coach
Adam Parker was not disappointed in the effort.
“We needed to defend and compete the whole game and we did that,” said Parker. “It was almost a moral victory to play well after coming out so flat on Sunday. Joe Glackin and our backs played very well and everyone worked hard.”
Potsdam (3-4-1) opens SUNYAC play on Saturday, Sept. 24, when the Bears travel to Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
