Figueroa lifts Bears to victory in season finale

Box Score POTSDAM—Sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa scored in the 16th minute and the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-9-4) made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Clarkson University (2-11-3). In his final game in a Bears jersey, senior goalkeeper Joseph Glackin recorded his program-leading 11th career shutout for Potsdam's first win over the Golden Knights since 2007.

The Bears outplayed Clarkson from the outset and the pressure paid off at 16:28. Freshman forward Tom Benedetto sent a cross to Figueroa and he blasted his team and SUNYAC leading 12th goal past Clarkson goalie Saverino Spagnolo for the decisive marker. Benedetto's five assists lead the team. In the 34th minute, Marco Parisi rang the Bears' crossbar, but that was as close as the Golden Knights would get.

Potsdam outshot Clarkson 7-4 in the second half, but was unable to pad its lead. The Golden Knights managed to put all of their shots on goal, but couldn't net the equalizer. Parisi nearly tied the game again in the 82nd, but a Bear defender was in position to make a team save.

Glackin finished with three saves to earn his 14th career win, also the most in Potsdam's history. Spagnolo made seven saves. The Bears outshot the Golden Knights 14-7. Figueroa finished the season on a tear, with eight goals in his last five games.
