POTSDAM, N.Y.- Senior
Katie Nawrot took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game against SUNY Canton as the Bears took both contests. Nawrot only allowed one hit and didn't walk a batter while striking out nine. Emiley Walters broke up the no-hitter bid with a solid single down the left field line but Nawrot would only allow four baserunners in the complete game shutout.
In the opener, Potsdam was staring at a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning but the team batted around and put six runs on the scoreboard to take control. Freshman
Megan Jubert led off the inning with a line drive double down the left field line and advanced to third base on freshman
Sami Brown's single. The Bears would get RBI's from
Heather Johnson,
Ashley Thayer,
Jenny Jones and
Carissa Cornwell. Canton would answer with three runs in the top of the sixth as they capitalized on two Potsdam errors in the inning and cut the lead to 7-6. Thayer, who was the victim of some poor defense behind her, put the tying runner on second base in the top of the seventh but enticed a pop out to end the game. She finished the game allowing only one earned run and struck out eight while improving to 7-9 on the season. The Bears had 13 hits on the game and five Bears had at least two hits. Jones went 3-for-3 on the game with two runs scored.
In the second game, Nawrot dominated the Kangaroos hitters. Nawrot, pitching in only her fourth game of the season, retired the first 17 batters in a row before consecutive runners reached base in the top of the sixth on errors. She would reach back and strike out the last batter in the inning to end the threat. Potsdam got on the board with one run in the first and second inning. Brown led off the top of the first with a bunt single and scored on Thayer's RBI groundout. Cornwell scored in the second on a wild pitch, which would be plenty of run support for Nawrot. Nawrot struck out at least one batter in each inning and ended the game with nine k's including two looking.
The Bears return to action on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader at Cortland. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
