BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (4-9-1, 1-4-1 SUNYAC) scored a goal in each half to down the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (7-7-1, 2-4) 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The play was fairly even during the first half and scoring chances were hard to come by. The Bengals broke through in the 28th minute as Alex Cassells headed home a free kick from Francesco Cardillo from 45 yards out. That was the only goal of the period and the goalkeepers only faced one other shot on goal apiece.
Just 3:40 into the second half, Buffalo State's Joe Vucic was awarded a penalty kick. However, Potsdam sophomore goalie
Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) robbed him to keep the deficit at one. The play continued to be tight, but the Bears were unable to close the gap. With just 5:08 remaining Vucic set up Keegan Lezama who ripped a one-timer into the net to close the scoring.
Davies finished with five saves on the day and Bengals goalie Hunter Hein matched him for the shutout.
The contest's shots were even at 16, but Buffalo State had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they head to Fredonia for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Blue Devils.
