POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-3) fell to Clarkson University (3-2) 63-42 Tuesday evening at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Bears senior captain
Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow senior captain
Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y./Indian Lake) finished with 15 points. Junior forward Ashley Loggins (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie) led the Golden Knights with 17 points and seven rebounds in the win.
It was a slow start to the contest with both teams struggling to score. Potsdam got on the board first off a jumper from junior forward
Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) two minutes into the period, but the court slanted Clarkson's way for much of the rest of the half. The Golden Knights took the lead for good at 16:08 when sophomore forward Alyssia Marsal (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) hit a layup to put Clarkson up 6-5. At 7:51, senior guard
Colleen McNamara (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) hit a jumper to get the Bears within 16-12, but Clarkson guard Cara Manfredi (Glastonbury, Conn./Geneseo) drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to seven and the Golden Knights momentum continued to build.
At 7:06, Manfredi fouled Weigel to send her to the line for two free throws. She hit both shots to cut the Golden Knights' lead to 19-14. Clarkson answered to close the opening 20 minutes with a 12-5 run and led 31-19 at the break.
Manfredi didn't waste any time in the final period, knocking down a jumper just 13 seconds into the half, but Reynolds countered with a three for the Bears. After Potsdam scored, the Golden Knights used a 21-9 run over the next eight minutes to assemble their largest lead of the night at 52-28. The Bears went on an 7-0 run after senior forward
Veronica Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) drained two free throws to make it 52-36. However, Loggins and Marsal responded with straight eight points to pull away a final time and earn the 63-42 victory.
Sapp finished with seven points and grabbed four rebounds in support of the Bears, while McNamara added five points.
Marsal registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Manfredi chipped in 11 points. Sophomore guard Stephanie Grobe (White River Junction, Vt./New Hartford) scored eight points and added 10 rebounds.
Clarkson shot 39 percent from the floor and 61 percent from the free-throw line. Potsdam forced 16 Golden Knight turnovers, while turning the ball over just 12 times itself.
The Bears return to action this weekend as they host SUNYAC opponents Oneonta and New Paltz. Potsdam faces the Red Dragons on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and the Hawks on Saturday at 4 p.m.
