Men’s soccer blanks Canton, 4-0

Box Score
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-1-1) scored three second half goals to put away SUNY Canton (3-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field. Senior forward Cliff Bondi (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) led the Bears with a goal and an assist and junior goalkeeper Jesse Kohler (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) earned his first win in a Potsdam jersey.

The teams appeared fairly evenly matched in the early going, but the field slowly tilted in the direction of the Kangaroos' goal. At 32:50, senior forward Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y./Dr. Freddie Thomas) finished a cross from junior forward Stephen Auyer (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) for his 25th career goal. The Bears outshot Canton 8-5 in the first half and took the 1-0 lead into the break.

It was all Potsdam in the second half. Bondi buried a rebound off a Figueroa shot just three minutes into the final 45 minutes. Two minutes later junior midfielder Johnny Zator (Lido Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) finished a perfect cross from Bondi to make it a 3-0 contest. At the 57:49, senior captain Alex Minsker (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) capped the scoring with a shot from the left side of the box. Tempers flared toward the end of the contest and the Kangaroos received three yellow cards in the final five minutes of play. Potsdam outshot Canton 12-3 in the period.

Kohler notched his first shutout with just two saves, while Roos freshman goalie Austin Lamay (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) was tagged with the loss. Lamay allowed all four goals and made seven saves in 65:17 before being relieved by fellow freshman Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen). Anunziatta didn't face a shot on goal.

The Bears finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Potsdam is back in action on Saturday when the Bears head to Bard College to face the Raptors at noon.
