Bears split on Day 1 of Oswego State Invite

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (4-5) fell to Hamilton College (6-2) 3-1 in the Oswego State Invitational opener before sweeping to a 3-0 victory over Alfred University (3-7) in the later contest.
 
Against the Continentals, the Bears took the first set 25-18 before dropping the next three in a row (13-25, 22-25, 19-25). Freshman setter Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) recorded 21 assists and six service aces. Graduate student outside hitter Annie Smith (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateauguay) led the offense with six kills, while freshman outside hitter Kelsey Tomkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) added four kills and two blocks. Senior libero Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y./Herricks) totaled 12 digs and two aces.
 
Potsdam rolled over the Saxons in the evening contest with set victories of 25-20, 25-6 and 25-17. In the dominating second set, the Bears had 11 kills and no attack errors. Topf contributed another 19 assists, eight digs and three kills. Freshman outside hitter Katie Agar (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) had four kills and four digs. Tomkins posted a team-high seven kills, while Smith and freshman setter Kelsea Healis (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Cotate) each contributed four more each.
 
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. when the Bears face Bard College. Potsdam then wraps up the tournament at noon against the host Lakers.
