NEW YORK, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (5-9) was defeated by New York University (11-5) 3-1 and Western New England College (11-4) 3-0 at the Violet Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
In the early game, the Violets took the opening two sets by 25-17 and 25-16 scores. In the third set, Potsdam rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win a 25-21victory before bowing in the fourth, 25-15. Graduate outside hitter
Annie Smith (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateauguay) continued her strong comeback with a game-high 11 kills and five digs. Junior outside hitter
Chelsea Sunday (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) had eight kills and nine digs. Freshman outside hitter
Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) contributed five kills and two solo blocks. Senior libero
Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y./Herricks) had a team high 17 digs, while freshman setter
Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) finished with 26 assists, four aces and 10 digs.
Against the Golden Bears, Western New England took three straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-20. Freshman outside hitter
Katie Agar (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) led the Bears offense with a career and team-high five kills. Smith added to her total for the day with four kills and five digs. Tompkins also chipped in four kills and a solo block. Arana had 11 digs and two kills and Topf totaled 10 more assists.
Potsdam is back in action next Friday night at 5 p.m. when they open SUNYAC play against Cortland at Oneonta.
