POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (5-3-1) scored a goal in each half to edge the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-3-1) 2-0 on a damp Sunday afternoon at Hantz Field.
The Bears were able to put some pressure on the Golden Knights' defense in the first half, outshooting Clarkson 8-5. However, it was Eric Herberger giving the Golden Knights all the offense they'd need in the 21st minute. Herberger headed home a free kick off the foot of Marco Parisi to make it a 1-0 contest.
Parisi gave Clarkson a little insurance in the 61st minute after finishing a cross in the box from Brian Kroetz. Potsdam sophomore goalie
Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made all of his three saves in the second half as the Golden Knights outshot the Bears 9-7 in the final 45 minutes. Potsdam's final chance came with about seven minutes to play, but Clarkson goalie Michael King handled the offering from junior forward
Stephen Auyer (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) to preserve the shutout. King finished with five saves on the day.
The Bears completed the day with a 15-14 advantage in shots and a 4-3 deficit in corner kicks.
Potsdam looks to get back in the win column next Saturday when the Bears host SUNY Plattsburgh in their SUNYAC opener at 1 p.m.
