Blue Devils hold off Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Fredonia State (5-6, 2-3 SUNYAC) held on to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-9, 0-4 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon 62-72. Senior captain Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) had a career-high day scoring 24 points for the Bears and adding eight rebounds and three steals.

Play was even throughout the first 12 minutes of the contest with neither team leading by more than three points. At 8:07, Fredonia's Alexis Cheatham knocked down a 3-pointer to ignite the Blue Devils' offense.  Fredonia went on a 13-4 run before junior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) hit from behind the arch. Both teams went basket-for-basket to close out the rest of the half with the Blue Devils taking the nine-point lead into the break.

The see-saw play continued in the beginning of the second half, but Fredonia State's Sabrina MaCaulay hit a free throw to bring their lead to double digits. Potsdam fought back to get within six when Weigel drained a three at 11:39, but the Blue Devils answered again. Senior guard Colleen McNamara (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Weigel combined for another six points to inch closer to Fredonia with less than six minutes reminding. The surge was too little, too late for the Bears and the Blue Devils held on to secure their 72-62 victory.

McNamara finished with 10 points and five boards, while senior guard Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y./Indian Lake) tallied nine points.

The Bears will close out their four game road trip Tuesday when they make their way to Vermont to take on the Middlebury Panthers at 6 p.m.
