Clarkson downs Potsdam 3-0 in season finale

POTSDAM N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (10-7-1) closed out the regular season at Clarkson University (5-9-2) Tuesday night at Hantz Turf Field. The Bears fell to the Golden Knights with a score of 3-0. Zachary Godin scored twice and recorded an assist during the contest for Clarkson.

At 17:42, the Golden Knights opened the scoring. Drew Lewis kicked a strike toward the goal, but the ball bounced off the post and Godin was there to finish. Clarkson edged Potsdam in shots 5-4 while the Bears had three corner kicks. Golden Knights' goalie Riley McDonald stopped four in the half and Bears' keeper Jesse Kohler (Middletown, N.Y. / Tompkins-Cortland C.C.) had one save.

Play continued to be even throughout the second half, but Potsdam couldn't keep Clarkson off the board. Jon Jones finished a headed off a free kick at 58:38 to put the Golden Knights up 2-0. The Bears managed to have three more corner kicks during the period, but were unable to convert. Godin added another goal, to close out the scoring, when a penalty was called inside the box on Potsdam with less than five minutes to go. The added insurance goal sealed the 3-0 victory for Clarkson.

McDonald finished with eight saves and the win, while Kohler stopped three. The Bears outshot Clarkson 15-12 and edged them 6-2 in corner kicks.

Potsdam will head to SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday to compete in the first round of SUNYAC playoffs at 6 p.m.
