Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints edge Bears in season finale, 2-1

CANTON, N.Y.—A late goal by St. Lawrence University (11-3-2) thwarted a rally by the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (9-8-1) and lifted the Saints to 2-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon. Senior captain Jess Sterns (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) capped her career with a goal that temporarily tied the contest in the 73rd minute and senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) tied a career-high with 10 saves.

The first half was tightly contested with just a handful of shots managed by both teams, but it was the Saints jumping out in front early. At the 12:09 mark, Samantha Rock headed home a cross from Amanda Hamilton to make it a 1-0 contest. Thibeau finished the half with two saves.

SLU turned up the pressure in the second half, firing 20 shots toward Potsdam's goal. However, Thibeau kept the contest close with eight more saves. Finally, the Bears earned a corner kick at 72:25. Junior midfielder Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss) lofted the ball into the box and Sterns redirected it past Saints goalie Kelsey West nine seconds later. However, the Saints were able to answer in the 80th minute. Katie Stames set up Emily DePoy for the game-winner.

The loss ends one of the finest seasons in program history. The Bears set a program record with seven straight wins early in the season. Their nine wins this year is just one shy of the program record. The contest also marks the end of the careers of Potsdam's seven seniors Sterns, Thibeau, Chloe Hay (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Balston Lake), Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart), Sara Sinnigen (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden), Erin McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) and Brenna Vukelic (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst).
