POTSDAM, N.Y.- Clarkson University (2-0) handled the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (0-2) with a score of 56-28 Wednesday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Senior forward
Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) led the Bears with nine points, while senior forward Ashley Loggins (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards and also had five steals.
Â
Both teams got out to a slow start during the first 10 minutes of play. With 2:13 left in the first quarter, the Golden Knights started to pick up a little momentum on the offensive end. Clarkson went on a 9-0 run to close out the quarter with a 12 point lead. The Golden Knights continued to dominate the second quarter and walked into the locker room at the half with a score of 33-10, while shooting 59-percent from the floor.
Â
Play started to even out during the second half of the contest as the teams went basket-for-basket after the six-minute mark in the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter, Potsdam opened the scoring with two made free throws from LaVoie followed by a layup from junior guard
Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter). Freshman guard
Breanne Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) drained a three at 7:44 before freshman guard Tricia Loso (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) knocked down a 3-pointer to end the Bears' 7-0 run. Potsdam's play started to pick up, but it was too little, too late as the time ticked to zero and the Golden Knights took the victory.
Â
Coleman finished with six points and two steals, while junior guard
Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) and Sapp each contributed four points and three rebounds.
Â
Sophomore guards Devin Sorell (Hannibal, N.Y./Hannibal) and Madison Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each tallied 10 points each. Shea also had six boards. Â
Â
The Bears outscored Clarkson 10-9 during the last 10 minutes of play, but the Golden Knights topped Potsdam 39-24 in rebounds on the night.
Â
Potsdam is back in action this weekend when they compete in the Kevin Fee Roos Classic at SUNY Canton Friday against Alfred State at 5 p.m. and Saturday the Bears will battle cross-town foe the Roos at 2 p.m.
