POTSDAM, N.Y.- Oswego State (4-2-2, 3-1-1 ECAC West) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-4-2, 1-4-1 ECAC West) Saturday afternoon 2-0. Sophomore forward Andrea Noss (Orange, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) and junior forward Brennan Butler (Lake Placid, N.Y./Northwood School) each scored for the Lakers.
Â
Oswego came out of the gate strong and attacked the Bears' defense early and often throughout the first stanza. Senior goalie
Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) stayed tough between the posts and kept the Lakers off the board. The game remained scoreless into the first intermission.
Â
The teams skated through an even second period. Both fired 11 shots on Tardelli and sophomore goalie Mariah Madrigal (Brownstown, Mich./Team Detroit), but the score remained tied.
Â
Just 10 second into the third stanza, the Lakers broke the tie with the first goal of the matchup. After a Potsdam miscue, Noss picked up the puck in front of the goal and fired it passed Tardelli for the 1-0 lead. Four seconds later, the Bears got called for a penalty. The defense killed off the penalty with Oswego only got three shots off. The teams went back-and-forth with offensive opportunities until the Lakers broke through again at 9:28. Butler made it 2-0, while senior defenseman Jayme McCreary (Waterloo, N.Y./Lysander Lightning) assisted on the play. Potsdam pulled Tardelli with less than a minute to go for an extra attacker, but the Bears fell short.
Â
Tardelli finished with 33 saves, while her counterpart, Madrigual, stopped 25. Oswego went 0-2 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-1. The Lakers outshot the Bears 35-25.
Â
Following Thanksgiving break, Potsdam will travel to Plattsburgh State Tues. Dec. 1 to battle the Cardinals at 7 p.m.
