POTSDAM, N.Y.—On a frigid day, Clarkson University (3-1) rallied for a double-overtime, 13-12 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-3) on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Knights overcame the Bears despite a tremendous performance by Potsdam sophomore goalie
Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), who made 12 of her 14 saves in the second half and two extra periods.
Bears senior attack
Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) had four goals and an assist to become the sixth player in program history to reach 100 points. Her 104 points currently places her fifth on Potsdam's all-time scoring list.
Weigel got the Bears started quickly with the first goal of the game at 28:33. Clarkson answered with the next three in a four-minute span to go up 3-1. Junior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) closed the gap to 21:16 and then fed Weigel to tie the game at 19:50. Junior defender Emma Jeffery (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) gave the Golden Knights their last lead of regulation with 11:39 left in the half. The Bears responded with three in a row to grab a 6-4 advantage at 7:56. At 11:25, junior midfielder
Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) entered the game an immediately buried a pass from Weigel to make it 4-4. Just over a minute later, McClusky scored an unassisted marker and sophomore midfielder
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) closed the run with another solo effort. Clarkson scored two of the half's three final goals, with Weigel scoring on a pass from McClusky at 2:23. Potsdam led 7-6 at the break.
Sophomore attack Paige Fayette (Theresa, N.Y./Indian River) opened the scoring in the second half with a man-up goal at 23:06 to get the Golden Knights even again. Two minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) started another 3-0 Potsdam run. At 19:55, Bears sophomore attack
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) made it 9-7 and senior attack
Katie Putnam (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) rifled home a pass from Newman at 16:51. Clarkson closed regulation on a 4-1 streak, beginning with a goal from sophomore attack Katie Dillon (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) at 16:09. Ferenczy countered with her second of the game on a helper from senior captain
Emily Petit (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) to give Potsdam its second three-goal advantage with 13:04 to play.
The Golden Knights increased their pressure after the goal, but were continually frustrated by Olshewske. Over the next 10 minutes, the goalie made five of her eight second half saves, including three on free position attempts. However, Clarkson's pressure continued to build. Junior midfielder Christine Wright (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) scored a man-up goal with 2:12 left and followed with an even-strength marker at 36 seconds later. Weigel grabbed the ensuing draw control and Potsdam called timeout with 1:32 left. The Bears focused on killing the clock after the breather. They cleared the ball successfully once, then brought back into their own end to eat more time. They turned the ball over with less than a minute to go and Fayette was fouled with 12 seconds remaining. When play resumed, she worked her way through the defense and fired a low shot into the net with just two seconds left.
Weigel netted her fourth goal of the game 1:19 into the first overtime, but Clarkson junior Stephanie Lynch (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made it 12-12 with a free-position goal at 3:13.
Olshewske stopped three more shots in the second overtime, but Lynch made the most of the fourth, ending the game with a sudden-death goal at 3:02.
Golden Knight junior goalie Danielle Tani (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) earned the win with three saves over the entire 68:58.
Clarkson outshot Potsdam 35-22 and collected 24 ground balls to Potsdam's 13. The Bears edged the Golden Knights 15-13 in draw controls, including a game-high seven by Weigel.
Potsdam is back in action on Saturday, when the Bears travel to Utica for a noon showdown with the Pioneers
