CORTLAND, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-2) downed Kean University (4-3) 11-7 for its second win in-a-row. Junior attackman
Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) scored four goals and freshman attackman
Dalston Day (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) had three goals and one assist to lead the Bears. Junior midfielder
Brian Martin (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) contributed a goal and two assists and freshman attackman
Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had three assists.
Day opened the contest with a goal just 2:32 into the contest. Kean tied the score six minutes later with a man-up goal from Matt Speciale. Junior captain
Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) gave Potsdam the lead for good at 6:04 and senior captain
Jon Woodworth (Great Bend, N.Y./Carthage) made it 3-1 at 4:43. Anthony Carpenter countered for the Cougars at 1:21, but Doherty scored his first with five seconds on the clock and the Bears led 4-2 after 15 minutes. Day assisted on the goal.
The Bears added to its lead with two more from Doherty at 13:24 and 8:24 on helpers from Martin and senior captain
Nick Waseleski (Victor, N.Y./Victor). Mike Singer got Kean within 6-3 at 2:44 and the score was unchanged at the half.
Potsdam junior
Brandon Grace (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) won the opening faceoff in the third quarter and Soderquist fed Martin to extend the lead to four. At 10:41, Martin found Day to give the Bears their biggest advantage of the day at 8-3. After the goal Potsdam ran into some penalty trouble. Anthony Perrotta and Carpenter scored two even strength goals to start a 4-0 run, but then made the most of the two man-up situations. Anthony Rybek scored on the man-advantage at 2:54 make it 8-6.
Rybek opened the fourth quarter with another man-up goal at 13:17 to close the gap to 8-7. Bears defense stiffened after the goal and shutdown the Cougars the rest of the way. Soderquist set up Doherty on the man-advantage two minutes later to start a game-clinching 3-0 run. Bonafede made it 10-7 with 7:41 left on a pass from sophomore attack
Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart). Day closed the scoring at 6:15 with his third goal on Soderquist's third assist of the contest.
In goal, junior
Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) earned his second win with nine saves. Kean's Maxwell Fields finished with 11 stops.
Grace had another strong day with 14 faceoff wins in 22 attempts.
The Bears outshot the Cougars 35-28 and had 38 ground balls to Kean's 29.
Potsdam looks to keep its momentum going when the Bears host Morrisville State at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in their home opener.
