POTSDAM, N.Y.—Trailing by four goals early, the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-5) battled back to tie St. Lawrence University (2-4) four times before ultimately succumbing to the Saints by a 15-11 count. Junior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) scored a team-high four goals and recorded two assists to become the seventh Bear to reach the 100-point mark in program history. Saints junior attack Chloe Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) matched McClusky's effort with six points (6g, 2a).
St. Lawrence raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 4:34 on goals from four different Saints including Knapp. At 24:04, sophomore midfielder
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) got Potsdam on the board and nearly 90 seconds later, senior captain
Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) set up sophomore defender
Hannah Keggins (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) to close the gap to 4-2. Knapp notched her second tally at 21:57, but the Bears scored three times in the following 10 minutes to even the game at 5-5. Wall scored on a free position at 20:39. McClusky's second of the day came on a man-up situation at 12:16. She then set up senior attack
Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) at 11:20.
Saints junior midfielder Michaela Maybee (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and Knapp answered in succession at 8:48 and 7:30, but SLU couldn't pull away. McClusky fed sophomore attack
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at 4:17 and the pair reversed roles 32 seconds later to tie the game at 7-7. With 3:35 left in the half, Saints junior attack Hayden Stein (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) scored and SLU took the 8-7 lead into the break.
Three minutes into the final period, Wall knotted the score again with another free-position goal. Every time the Bears seemed to be on the brink over overtaking the Saints, St. Lawrence answered. Knapp made it 9-8 at 25:13, but Weigel again evened the score less than two minutes later. With 21:01 on the clock, Saints senior goalie Adden Cunningham (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) stuffed a Weigel free-position attempt that would have put Potsdam in front. It proved to be the turning point of the game as SLU freshman midfielder Kayla Schmalz (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) put the Saints in front for good 48 seconds later. The goal sparked SLU to a 6-2 run to close the game, including another goal by Schmalz during the stretch. McClusky got her 99th point at 16:09 and her 100th at 9:09, but the Bears couldn't complete a comeback.
In goal, Potsdam sophomore
Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made 12 saves. Cunningham stopped 11 shots for the win.
McClusky now has 58 goals and 42 assists, placing her seventh on the program's scoring list, 10th on the goals scored list and four on the assists list. Weigel now has 108 points (72g, 36a), good for fifth all-time in points, goals and assists. Wall is also closing in on the century mark with 71 goals and 13 assists for 84 points. She ranks ninth in points and sixth in goals.
