CLERMONT, FLA.—In its first Tuesday contest, the SUNY Potsdam softball team (1-5) rallied from an early deficit for a 4-2 victory over Immaculata University (0-4). The victory was the first career win for head coach
Nicole Yost, the third coach in the program's history.
The Mighty Macs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a RBI single from right fielder Angelina Welch. Next, center fielder Christiana Donofry walked to load the bases, but junior pitcher
Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) got first baseman Kelsey Collevechio to fly out to end the threat.
The Bears bats got going in the bottom of the third. Sophomore shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) led off with a double. After Chirinko reached on an error, junior catcher
Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) followed with a two-run double to put Potsdam up for good. Freshman third baseman
Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) kept the rally going with an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore pinch runner
Emily Tremblay (Fort Covington, N.Y./Salmon River). Junior pinch runner
Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) then came around to score on an error and the Bears led 4-1.
Chirinko worked around a three singles for a scoreless fourth. Immaculata threatened in the fifth. Shortstop Annemarie Bartow led off with a double and pitcher Megan Kugler walked. Yost then went to her bullpen for freshman pitcher Megan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia). Dougherty immediately got designated hitter Caitlyn Hudock to ground into a double play. Bartow scored on an error on the next play, but Dougherty ended the threat as Lauren Penn grounded out to third.
Dougherty retired the Mighty Macs in order in the top of the sixth and then worked out of a two on and nobody out jam for a scoreless seventh.
Chirinko (1-2) allowed two unearned runs on six hits in four plus innings. She walked six and struck out three. Dougherty notched her first save with three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Kugler took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, in six innings pitched, while striking out four and walking one.
The Bears ran into a steamroller in Adrian College (6-0) in the day's finale. The Bulldogs scored twice in the first, but Potsdam answered with an RBI single from sophomore right fielder
Brittaney Barr (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) that scored Tremblay. Adrian then tacked on two more in the top of the third, but again Potsdam answered in the bottom of the inning. Marsman doubled to left centerfield to drive in Chirinko and make it 4-2. The scored stayed tight until the Bulldogs added another run in the fifth and then broke the game open with seven runs in the top of sixth to capture the 11-2 win.
Freshman pitcher
Jaime Hoskins (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) fell to 0-3. She allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 4.2 innings, while striking out three and walking two. Senior
Megan Briner (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) allowed six runs, though just three were earned, in a third of an inning. Dougherty closed out the game with an unearned run on two hits in an inning pitched.
Katie Jenkins earned the victory for the Bulldogs, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Catcher Morgan Brandt led Adrian offensively with a perfect day from the plate. She was 4-for-4 with three RBI's and four runs scored.
The Bears are off Wednesday, but resume play with games against Ohio Northern University and the Rose-Hulman Institute on Thursday.
