Blue Devils take pair from Potsdam

FREDONIA, N.Y.—Fredonia State (7-8, 4-0 SUNYAC) took two games from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (2-10, 0-2) on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils won game one 4-0 and game two 5-1. Despite the game being played in Fredonia, the Bears were the "home" team for both games, as they were originally supposed to host the contests.

In the opener, Fredonia did all its damage in the top of the first inning. Four hits and two Bears' errors allowed the Blue Devils to plate all four runs. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) led off the bottom of the inning with a triple, but was stranded after Kelsey Gannett was able to pitch out of the jam. Freshman third baseman Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) singled in the second, but the Bears otherwise couldn't solve Gannett.

Potsdam junior pitcher Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) (1-5) did not allow a hit after the first and went the distance. She finished with four runs, just two earned, on four hits, while striking out two and walking three.

Gannett (3-2) also pitched seven strong innings for the shutout. She K'd 13 without a walk and allowed just the two Bears' hits.

Fredonia struck early in the second contest as well. After two Blue Devil hits, designated hitter Jess Lauck singled up the middle to drive in the first Fredonia run. Centerfielder Maggie Paras followed win an RBI infield hit and Lauck moved to third on the play. Next, Potsdam freshman catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) gunned down Paras at second for the third out, but not before Lauck stole home to make it 3-0. Fredonia tacked on a fourth run in the top of the second on a wild pitch.

Potsdam got on the board in the bottom of the third. Junior second baseman Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) led off with a single down the leftfield line. Sophomore designated hitter Angela Yodis (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) then sacrificed Lerman to third. Freshman centerfielder Lyndale Nephew (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic) followed by driving in Lerman with a single up the middle, but was thrown out trying to reach second base. Ott followed with a single before Fredonia pitcher Adlyn Carlson shutdown the rally with a strikeout. The Blue Devils closed the scoring with a fifth run in the top of the fifth on a single from Lindsey Forness to make it 5-1.

Potsdam freshman pitcher Jaime Hoskins (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) (1-5) allowed nine hits and five runs in 6.2 innings, while striking out career-high seven and walking just one. Freshman Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) retired the lone batter she faced in the top of the seventh.

Carlson allowed one run on five hits and recorded a strikeout in the first three innings. Megan Degroat (3-3) earned the victory with four scoreless innings and two K's to close out the game.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they head to Buffalo State for a noon doubleheader with the Bengals.
