POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore attack
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) scored a career-high five goals and added an assist as the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-7, 1-2 SUNYAC) downed SUNY New Paltz (2-6, 1-3) 17-12 for its second consecutive victory. Senior attack
Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) also had a five-point day for the Bears with two goals and three assists. Senior captain Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored four goals to lead the Hawks.
The first half was as tightly played all Potsdam-New Paltz games seem to be. In the 13-game series, only four have been decided by more than four goals.
Just 1:17 into the contest, sophomore attack
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) to make it 1-0 Bears. At the 22:50 mark, junior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) set up Weigel's first of the day to double the advantage. However, Citro answered with two in a row to tie the score. She got the Hawks on the board at 22:19 and then scored a man-up goal at 19:15. Weigel got her second at 17:38 to put Potsdam up for good. Newman scored her first of the game at 16:29 to make it 4-2, but Citro got her third just over a minute later. Off the ensuing draw control, Bears sophomore defender
Hannah Keggins (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scooped up the ball and drove straight to the net to make it 5-3 14 seconds later. Hawks senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) countered at 13:36 and ended the back-and-forth scoring.
The Bears went on a 4-1 run over the next 10 minutes. Weigel found sophomore attack
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at 8:15. Newman scored a man-up goal at 6:20. After Valdivia got New Paltz's fourth goal at 5:57, Lapinski and Newman scored in succession to make it 9-5 Bears at 3:27. The Hawks wouldn't go away and finished the half on a 3-0 run and trailed just 9-8 at the break. Sophomore attack Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), senior attack Jackie Wilkom (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and senior defender Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) did the damage for New Paltz.
Potsdam finally seized control with an 8-2 run spanning the first 26:26 of the final 30 minutes. Senior captain
Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) opened the streak with two straight with assists from McClusky and Newman, respectively. McClusky then fed Newman for her fourth of the day at 20:55. Citro scored her fourth at 19:24, but the Bears reeled off the next three straight. McClusky scored at 18:55. Weigel set up Wall 11 seconds later and McClusky fed Cole to make it 15-9 Potsdam at 16:43. Valdivia briefly cut the deficit to five, but Newman buried her fifth on Weigel's third helper at 8:51. Cole then assisted on Lapinski's personal best third goal of the contest to make it 17-10 with 3:34 on the clock. Wagner and Wilkom scored the final two, but New Paltz ran out of time.
In goal, sophomore
Devan Olschewske (Canadaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) earned her sixth career victory with four saves. Senior captain Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made 14 stops for the Hawks.
Potsdam outshot New Paltz 41-19 and topped the Hawks in ground balls 30-21. Weigel's 13 draw controls fell two shy of her program single-game record that she set at New Paltz last season.
Wall's three goals place her just a point short of 100. Her 84 goals and 15 assists place her in eighth on the all-time scoring list and fifth in goals. Weigel's day gives her 122 points (78g, 44a) placing her fourth in scoring, seventh in goals and third in assists. McClusky now has 110 points (61g, 49a), making her fifth in points, 10th in goals and third in assists.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday, when they host the SUNY Canton Kangaroos at 4 p.m.
