Roos capture VPI title, Bears runners-up

Box Score 1 POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Canton volleyball team (7-0) didn't lose a set all weekend en route to winning the 2015 Victory Promotions Invitational. The Kangaroos dropped Cégep André-Laurendeau (2-2) and Utica College (2-7) by identical 3-0 scores on Saturday. Canton senior middle hitter Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) was named the Tournament MVP.
 
The Bears finished second after rallying to down the University of Maine-Fort Kent (9-4) in five sets and falling 3-1 to Cégep André-Laurendeau. Sophomore Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) was named to the all-tournament team.
 
Regis College (5-4) bounced back Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Johnson State (1-6) followed by a 3-1 win over Maine-Fort Kent. Cégep André-Laurendeau downed Johnson State 3-0 for a 2-1 finish to the weekend. Utica also completed the tournament with a 3-0 win over Johnson State.
 
The Bears found themselves trailing the Bengals 2-1 after a 19-25, 25-16 and 25-23 start to the day. However, Potsdam answered with a 25-17 win in set four and a 15-12 triumph in the finale. Topf had a career-high 26 kills to go with 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connolly) also set a personal best with 19 kills, while sophomore setter Kelsea Healis (San Diego, Calif./Rancho) added seven kills. Freshman setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) outdid herself again with 53 assists. Junior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hillls-Ballston Lake) had game-highs in digs (29) and aces (6). Senior libero Allie Romaniello (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) contributed 16 digs, two assists and two aces.
 
In the exhibition match with Cégep André-Laurendeau, Potsdam fell in the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17 before taking set three 26-24. However, the Boomerang closed out the match with a 25-16 decision. Rodda added 18 more assists as well as five aces and 12 digs to her tournament totals. Topf had six kills, 10 digs, two aces and a block and Romaniello contributed 14 digs.
 
Next weekend the Bears head to Mahwah, N.J. for four matches in Ramapo College's Roadrunner Invitational.
