Bears fall to Red Dragons

POTSDAM, N.Y.- A strong scoring effort from SUNY Cortland (10-2, 4-1 SUNYAC) pushed the Red Dragons past the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-11, 1-4 SUNYAC) Friday night at Corey Gym. The Red Dragons defeated the Bears 93-72. Freshman guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) fell short of a double-double with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds on the night for the Bears. Cortland's Blair Estarfaa finished with 17 points, four boards and three assists in the win.

Senior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central) drained a 3-pointer to start off the contest, but the Red Dragons didn't let it faze them. Cortland answered with a 19-3 run that was started by a made layup from Estarfaa. The run lasted over the next six minutes of play before a made free throw from sophomore forward Josh Blagrove (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) slowed the attack. At 12:05, JP Regan knocked down a shot from behind the arch to spark another scoring run for the Red Dragons. A jumper from Dre Hampton capped the run. Play evened out the remaining three minutes of the half with Cortland taking the 52-25 lead into the locker room.

The Red Dragons got out to their largest lead of the night after a dunk from Carrel Joseph, a minute into the second half. The Bears answered with a mini 11-5 run including six points and a dunk from freshman forward Tyrone Adeyeye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) to cut Cortland's lead. Then Onabor started to heat up. He scored 14 of his 22 points in the last 14 minutes of play. A three from Onabor at the 4:30 mark, got Potsdam within 18, but that was a closest they would get. Cortland grabbed the 93-72 victory.

Freshman guard Nate Wyatt (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) also finished short of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) added seven points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Adeyeye tacked on six points. For Cortland, Joseph followed Estarfaa with 10 points and Zay Cotton added eight points.

The Red Dragons edged the Bears 42-41 in rebounds and Potsdam held the advantage at the free throw line, 77-percent to 60-percent.

The Bears will travel to Oswego State to battle the Lakers at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
