Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Red Dragons edge Bears, 2-1

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (5-6-1, 1-5-1 ECAC West) scored a late third period goal to upend the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-9-1, 1-8-1) on Friday afternoon. Senior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) scored for the Bears and senior assistant captain Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) made 30 saves in goal.

Strong defense and goaltending were the story of the first period. Potsdam fired 11 shots on goal and the Red Dragons countered with 13. However, Cortland's Deanna Meunier and Tardelli were perfect through 20 minutes.

Special teams finally got the scoring started. At 10:50, Katie Gili finally solved Tardelli on the power play to put Cortland up 1-0. Just 4:16 later, Greene evened the score with a power-play tally of her own. Junior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) each recorded assists. Tardelli and Meunier added 13 and 11 saves to their totals, respectively, as the teams entered the second intermission still tied.

The Bears controlled the play early in the third period, not allowing a shot on goal until over halfway through the final 20 minutes. However, Potsdam was also unable to take the lead due to more strong play from Meunier. Cortland withstood the pressure and at 17:25, Niamh O'Connor scored the eventual game-winner. The Bears were called for a roughing penalty with 1:01 remaining and couldn't pull Tardelli until there were just 30 seconds left. The Red Dragons held on for their first conference win of the season.

Meunier matched Tardelli with 30 stops. Cortland outshot Potsdam 32-31 and was 1-for-4 on the power play. The Bears were 1-for-3 on the man advantage.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
