Buffalo State runs past Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y.-  Strong scoring from Buffalo State (12-7, 6-6 SUNYAC) led the Bengals over the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-17, 1-10 SUNYAC) Saturday evening with a score of 105-61. Freshman guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) finished with 17 points to lead the Bears, while Lovell Smith was 12-14 from the floor with 26 points.

Smith opened the scoring of the contest with a layup. Then the teams traded baskets over the next five minutes of play. Onabor hit from behind the arch twice to tie the game at 14 apiece then the Bengals' offense exploded. Buffalo State cruised on the offensive end through the rest of the first half and took the 54-27 lead into halftime.

The Bengals opened the second with a 19-5 run that carried over the first seven minutes of the half. Play started to even out after a made free throw from freshman forward Nate Wyatt (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) at 12:53. The Bears kept up with Buffalo State, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome. With 2:57 to go, Potsdam went on an 8-1 run to close out the game and the Bengals took the 105-67 win.

Buffalo State edged Potsdam 48-35 on the boards.

Senior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) tallied 11 points and freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) had nine points and eight rebounds. Dominic Grayer and Akeem Williams each finished with 12 points and Kevin Marmolejos added another 11. Mike Henry grabbed a game-high 11 boards for the Bengals.

Potsdam will head back to Jerry Welch Gymnasium for Bear Pride Night to host SUNY New Paltz on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. Saturday.
