Potsdam falls to Wells, Stevens on final day of Utica tournament

UTICA, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (12-6) closed out day two of the Utica College Tournament Saturday afternoon. In the opening match, the Bears fell to Wells College (10-5) 2-3 then Potsdam was swept by Stevens Institute of Technology (18-2) 0-3.
 
In the first contest, the Express took set one 25-23 but the Bears rallied for a 25-22 victory in set two. Potsdam outlasted Wells 27-25 in the third set, but the Express rallied for 25-15 and 15-13 wins to take the 3-2 win. Junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) totaled 17 kills and 21 digs, while senior outside hitter Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and junior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each contributed nine kills. Coyle also added 12 digs. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had another strong performance with 37 assists and 17 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) rounded out the leaders with 11 digs.
 
In the finale, the Bears were swept by Stevens with scores of 15-25, 14-25 and 13-25. Topf led the offense with nine kills and added 11 digs for the defense. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connelly) followed Topf with seven kills, while Tompkins finished with six. Rodda totaled 19 assists and four digs and Coyle tallied nine digs. Freshman defensive specialist Sofia Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) led the defense with 13 digs for Potsdam.
 
The Bears are back in action next weekend when they travel to Oswego State to compete in a round of SUNYAC Pool Play against Oneonta on Friday night at 7 p.m., Buffalo State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Cortland at 3 p.m.
