POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Potsdam junior defender
Matthew Wagner (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored twice, including 3:30 into overtime, to help the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (9-6-2) defeat Clarkson University (6-7-2) 3-2 in its season finale. In his final game, senior midfielder
Patrick Mylod (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored the other goal for the Bears.
Wagner netted his first just 3:51 into the opening period, heading home a corner kick from sophomore defender
John Becker (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) to make it 1-0. Potsdam outshot the Golden Knights 5-4 in the opening half and took the one-goal lead into the break.
Clarkson tied the score 1:03 into the second half. Freshman forward Aidan Subra (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) finished a cross from sophomore midfielder Kevin Chrisey (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) at the left side of the box. However, the Bears answered 1:42 later. Mylod beat Clarkson freshman goalie Ian Roeloffs (Warwark, N.Y./Warwick Valley) with a direct kick from just outside the box. The Potsdam held the lead until the 72nd minute when the Golden Knights were awarded a penalty kick. Junior forward Kevin Calnan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) stuck the ball in the lower left corner of the net to tie the score. Bears sophomore forward
Connor DeSantis (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) had one final chance in regulation with 53 seconds left, but it was blocked before it reached Roeloffs.
Potsdam had the only two shots of overtime and made the most of the second one. After a Golden Knights foul, Becker was awarded a free kick outside the box. Wagner headed it into the left corner of the goal at 93:30 to end the contest.
Bears junior goalie Keagan Briggs (Peru, N.Y./Seton Catholic) made two saves to win his first collegiate start. Roeloffs finished with three saves. Potsdam outshot Clarkson 12-9 and edged the Golden Knights 6-5 in corner kicks.
The contest brings to a close the careers of seniors Mylod,
Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and
Justin Kellett (Chazy Lake, N.Y./North Country C.C.).
