Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kellett, Laurin help Bears tie New Paltz late, 2-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior forward Justin Kellett (Chazy Lake, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) scored with 0.5 seconds remaining to give the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (6-3-2, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) a 2-2 tie with SUNY New Paltz (5-3-5, 1-3-1) on Friday afternoon. Junior forward Brandon Laurin (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy) started the Bears comeback with the other goal in the 81st minute.

The teams combined for just seven shots in the first half, but both teams managed strong scoring chances. Just 1:50 into the contest, Laurin intercepted a Hawks clearing attempt and went in all alone. Charging New Paltz defenders prevented him from getting a hard shot away and Hawks junior goalie John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) came out to smother it. Just over six minutes later, New Paltz freshman forward Luke Dole (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) directed a shot toward the net from the left side, but was shut down by Bears freshman goalie Jake Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport). The best scoring opportunity of the half came at the 26:19 mark as Hawks senior midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies) headed a corner kick toward the right corner of the net. However, Mitchell reacted quickly, diving to his left to keep the contest scoreless.

New Paltz held the edge in play for much of the second half and finally broke through at 61:01. Spring played the ball ahead to the right side of the box where freshman midfielder Coltan Goodwine (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) beat Mitchell with a low shot. Just over 10 minutes later, senior forward Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) knocked home a cross from junior forward Aleco Podias (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) to make it a 2-0 game. For several minutes after the goal, Potsdam continued to struggle to get the offense going, but the Bears began to piece it together with about 10 minutes left in regulation. With 9:02 remaining, sophomore midfielder Isaac Sanabria (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) fed Laurin who sent a rocket from 30 yards out into the upper left corner of the of the net. The goal sparked the Bears, who pressed for the rest of regulation. Potsdam senior midfielder Patrick Mylod (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got a corner kick away with five seconds remaining. After it bounced off several players in front, Kellett drove it into the right corner to tie the game.

New Paltz took the only two shots of the first overtime without any luck. They started the same way in the second, but Potsdam took over halfway through. At 105:49, Guzzo made a diving save on another Kellett attempt. Three minutes later, Kellett headed the ball just over the crossbar and with 51 seconds left, sophomore midfielder Tyler Mullery (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) ripped a shot wide right of the goal. Despite the late fury, the teams settled for the 2-2 draw.

Mitchell finished with four saves and Guzzo with three stops. The Hawks outshot the Bears 14-10 and edged them 5-4 in corners.

Potsdam hosts No. 22 SUNY Oneonta at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
