Red Dragons rally past Bears

ONEONTA, N.Y.- SUNY Oneonta (6-3-4, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) mounted a comeback to slip by the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (8-4-1, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) 1-2 Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored the lone goal for the Bears.

The Red Dragons controlled the offensive chances and had Potsdam pinned in their own zone for most of the first half, but the Bears took advantage of an opportunity at the 41st minute. Falsion took control of ball off the end line and took the shot that sailed over Oneonta goalie Emilie Mull for the 1-0 lead. The defense and senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) stayed tough to hold Oneonta scoreless over the first 45 minutes.

The Red Dragons wasted no time tying the game with a goal at the 49:24 minute mark. Oneonta was awarded a corner kick that Emily Opalinski sent into the box. The ball bounced around before Nicole Donadio picked it up and fired a shot in the back of the net. The Red Dragons kept the Bear defense busy throughout the second half before they took the lead with a goal from Kayla Belush and the assist from Taylor Messina with 15 minutes to go. Oneonta kept the pressure on Potsdam and closed out the game with the 2-1 victory over the Bears.

Thibeau finished with nine saves, while Mull stopped two.

Potsdam returns home this weekend to host SUNY Fredonia on Friday at 3 p.m. and Buffalo State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
