Lycoming hands Potsdam loss

WILLIAMSPORT, P.A.- Lycoming College (10-1) took down the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-9) 86-64 Saturday afternoon at Lamade Gymnasium to close out the Lycoming Crosstown Challenge. Sophomore guard Sergne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) fell short of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bears. Nyk King put up 17 points and five boards in the win for the Warriors.

Balance of play between the two teams started the contest. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) knocked down a three to tie the game at 13-all at the 14:39 mark. Potsdam took a one-point lead after a made free throw from sophomore captain Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville), but two foul shots from Willie Kee got Lycoming ahead again. The Bears tied the game once more at 11:07 after a free throw from junior captain Kevin Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill). Then Calvin Chandler hit from behind the arch followed by another one from T.J. Duckett and one more from Chandler to take the lead and Warriors never looked back. Potsdam's offense made a turn around with a 3-point play from Kane and a 3-pointer from freshman guard Aaron Armstrong (Lisbon, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) to get within three. The Warriors' sparkled again for a 16-6 run to close out the half with Lycoming holding a 44-29 lead.

Lycoming wasted no time getting their offense started in the second half. The Warriors opened play with a 30-9 run that spanned over the first nine minutes. Langley capped the run with a 3-point play and ignited a 23-12 Bear run that went right through the end of the half. Kane scored 11 of his 16 points during the span, but Lycoming took the 86-63 victory.

Langley finished with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Onabor and Baksh each scored eight for Potsdam.

Duckett scored 14 points and Chris Wallace added 12. David Johnson tallied 10 points, while Chandler had eight points and team-high nine boards.

The Bears are off until after the New Year when they will play host to Buffalo State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and SUNY Fredonia on Saturday at 12 p.m.
