Bears halt Chargers, Valiants blank Bears

CLERMONT, FLA.—Sparked by a grand slam from senior third baseman Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello), the SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-6) overpowered Landcaster Bible College (1-5) 9-1 in 5 innings. In the nightcap, Manhattanville College (8-0) shut out the Bears 6-0.

Against the Chargers, Potsdam took the lead for good with two runs in bottom of the second inning. Senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) reached on an error and came around to score on a second one. Three batters later, freshman centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) drove in Cohn with an RBI single.

The Bears broke the game open with a six-run fourth. Senior captain Kate Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore designated hitter Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) moved her to second with a single and Lerman loaded the bases with a second single. Cohn followed with the four-run blast to make it 6-0. Sophomore right fielder Lyndale Nephew (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic) and Falsion continued the onslaught with two more singles before junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) knocked them in with a ground-rule double to make it 8-0.

After Lancaster Bible broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from right fielder Ashli Schmidt, Ott scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom half to end the game.

Senior pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. She also earned her first win as a Bear allowing just two hits and a run, while striking out three. Cohn finished 2-for-3 with the four RBI's and two runs scored. Nephew was 2-for-2 with a run and Falsion was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Julia D'Arrigo allowed six earned runs on 13 hits and two walks for the Chargers. She struck out two.

It was all Valiants in a game that was delayed an hour and a half. Second baseman Desiree Buboi hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to put Manhattanville up for good. The Valiants made the most of four hits and three Potsdam errors in the bottom of the fourth to tack on the final four runs. Freshman pitcher Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) came in to record the final out of the fourth and allowed just two hits in the final two innings.

Sophomore pitcher Meghan Dougherty fell to 3-2 after allowing four earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Julianna Orrico earned the shutout by scattering seven hits, striking out eight and not allowing a walk.

Ott was 2-for-4 and Brace went 2-for-3 for the Bears. Hubinsky, Cohn and Nephew also had hits for Potsdam.

The Bears wrap up their Florida trip with two final games tomorrow. They face Arcadia University at 9 a.m. and Millsaps College at 1 p.m. Potsdam was originally scheduled to play Ursinus at 3 p.m. in the second contest.
