Fast start propels Potsdam past Canton, McClusky moves into third on scoring list

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-1) built a 13-2 first half lead en route to a 20-5 victory over SUNY Canton (1-2) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) recorded four goals and four assists to move her past Molly Lehman-Lewis '10 into third place on the Bears' all-time scoring list with 159 points. junior attack Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) had a career-high six goals to go with an assist for seven points. Junior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) also scored a career-best five goals.
 
Potsdam raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 6:16. Junior attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) opened the scoring just 1:39 into the contest with an assist from freshman midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown). McClusky followed with three straight goals. The first came on a free position and the the next two were assisted by
senior defender Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and Newman. Amanda Woods scored the Kangaroo's first of the day at 22:59 before Potsdam responded with the next three. Cole struck at 20:50 and 19:31 and Newman made it 7-1 with a man-up tally at 17:00. Woods closed the gap to 7-2 31 seconds later, but it was all Bears for the rest of the half. Newman scored four of the final six goals of the half, with the other two coming from sophomore attack Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and senior defender Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). Potsdam led 13-2 at the break.
 
McClusky notched her fourth of the contest to open the second half. Canton got the next two goals from Devyn Hutcheson and Robyn Carroll, but the Bears closed the contest on a 6-1 run. Cole scored three times during the stretch. Newman added two and Blake closed the scoring with 4:15 remaining.
 
Junior goalie Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) needed just four saves to earn the win. Becca Kieffer finished with 12 saves for the Roos.
 
The Bears outshot Canton 42-15 and finished with a 23-17 edge in ground balls. The Roos totaled 14 draw controls to Potsdam's 13. The Bears caused 14 turnovers.
 
Potsdam hosts Utica College in its home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
