Big days from Bonafede, Doherty lead Bears past Cougars, 13-9

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Senior captains Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) and Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) combined for 11 points as the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-1) defeated Kean University (4-2) 13-9 at Onondaga Community College. Bonafede had a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists and Doherty contributed four goals. Junior attackman Berkley Stone (Madision, Conn./Daniel Hand) added two goals and senior midfielder Brian Martin (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) finished with a goal and an assist.
 
Potsdam opened the contest on a 5-1 run. Martin and Bonafede put the Bears up 2-0 by 6:32 of the first period. Soderquist assisted on Martin's goal. Anthony Perrotta got the Cougars on the board, but the Bears led 2-1 after 15 minutes.
 
Doherty, Stone and Bonafede scored in succession to open the second quarter, with Soderquist adding assists on the first and third tallies. Kean struck back with a 5-0 run from five different players to take a 6-5 lead into the break. The Cougars scored two man-up goals during the stretch.
 
Junior attackman Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) tied the game at 12:45 of the third and Martin set up Stone 40 seconds later to regain the lead. However, Kean countered with two of its own, including its third man-up goal, to take an 8-7 advantage at 10:50. Bonafede tied the game at 6:22 and then set up Doherty three minutes later to make it 9-8 after three quarters.
 
The Cougars tied the game one final time at 10:36 of the fourth quarter with their fourth man-up goal of the day, but Potsdam sealed the win with four unanswered goals to close the contest. Doherty scored the first and last and Bonafede notched the middle two.
 
Senior captain Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) earned his 10th career victory with three saves. Maxwell Fields was tagged with the loss despite stopping 11 shots.
 
The Bears edged Kean 32-31 in shots and the teams each recorded 25 ground balls. The Cougars were 4-of-5 on the man advantage and Potsdam finished 0-4.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they head to Morrisville to face the Mustangs at 1 p.m.
