CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (4-4) used a late run to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team for an 18-9 victory on Tuesday evening. Junior midfielder
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) led the Bears with three goals and fellow juniors
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) added two apiece. Senior midfielder
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) recorded two assists giving her 163 career points. The total ties her for second on the program's all-time scoring list with Potsdam Hall of Famer Alisha Schaad-Waite '08.
The contest proved to be a game of runs. The Saints built a 3-0 lead over the first 10 minutes before junior attack
Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) got the Bears on the board with an unassisted tally at 14:36. After SLU extended the advantage to 5-1, Newman answered again for Potsdam at 9:16. The Saints closed the half on a 4-0 run, including two goals from Kayla Schmalz, to take a 9-2 advantage into the break.
Potsdam scored three in a row to open the second half. Cole started the run with an assist from senior defender
Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) just nine seconds into the final 30 minutes. Lapinski struck on a free position at 28:17 and Newman notched her second of the game 43 seconds later. SLU then rattled off the next four goals to take a 13-5 lead with 23:34 left. The Bears countered with four in a row over the next 10 minutes. Newman completed her hat trick at 21:13. McCabe scored at 20:07 with a helper from McClusky. McClusky then set up Lapinski's second of the contest. Cole capped the stretch with her second at 11:46 to close the gap to 13-9. The Saints were able to stop Potsdam's momentum at 10:54 with a goal from Abigail Owens, igniting a 5-0 run to seal the victory.

Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) finished with 10 saves for the Bears. Olga Lukas made three saves in the first 48:14 to earn the win. Cricket Wemyss didn't face a shot on goal in the remainder of the contest. Kiera Taussig scored a game-high seven goals for SLU.
Potsdam is back in action on Saturday when the Bears travel to Buffalo State for a 1 p.m. contest to open SUNYAC play.
