CLERMONT, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (2-2) opened the second day of its Florida competition with another walk off win. The Bears rallied past the Sage Colleges (0-2) for a 10-9 victory as senior
Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) singled in the bottom of the seventh. Simmons College (1-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down the Bears 7-2 in the second contest.
The Gators grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double from centerfielder Jennifer Onwe. However, senior captain
Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) singlehandedly erased the deficit with a solo blast to right centerfield. Sage scored four runs on three hits and four errors in the top of the third to grab a 5-1 lead. Again the Bears countered. Junior shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) started the rally with a one-out walk. Chirinko followed with a single up the middle. After a strikeout, Marsman walked to load the bases and Ott scored as Brace reached on an error. Senior captain
Alexis Lerman (Fayettville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) then drove in Marsman to close the gap to 5-4.
A pair of singles in the top of the fourth put the Gators back up 6-4, but Potsdam tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore pitcher
Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) doubled and eventually scored on a bunt by Brace. Senior designated hitter
Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) later walked to bring in Marsman and make it a 6-6 contest. Sage went back up 9-6 in the top of the sixth on a two-run double and an error. Ott doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-7.
Sophomore pitcher
Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) allowed just a lead off single in the top of the seventh, but the runner was gunned down by sophomore catcher
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) trying to swipe second. The first two Bears were retired in the bottom of the seventh before junior first baseman
Erin Murphy (Kingston, N.Y./Kingson) crushed an Allison Ford offering over the right centerfield fence to get Potsdam within one. Next, freshman centerfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) reached on a bunt single and came all the way around to tie the game on the same play as Sage threw the ball around the infield. Ott followed with a single and then stole both second and third base before Chirinko singled to right for the game-winning run.
Ott was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Chirinko was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Marsman was 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and three runs scored.
Hubinsky allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two in 2.2 innings pitched. Freshman
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched 2.2 innings of middle relief, allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk. Dougherty earned the victory in relief by striking out three and allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings. Lindsay Brace started on the mound for the Gators, allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out four. Ford was the loser after giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks in the final 2.1.
Potsdam started quickly against the Sharks. After Dougherty stranded two base runners in the top of the first, the Bears rewarded her in the bottom of the inning. Ott led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Chirinko. Marsman doubled in Ott. Brace followed with another double and Potsdam led 2-0. The lead was short lived as Simmons made the most of three hits and four Bears' errors to score three runs in the top of the second. They tacked on two more in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth to go on to the 7-2 victory.
Marsman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Brace finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lerman was 2-for-3.
Michaela Reeves went the distance for Simmons, striking out eight, while allowing eight hits and three walks. Dougherty was tagged with the loss after after allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks in 2.1 innings pitched. She struck out three Sharks. Chirinko also struck out three, but allowed two runs on five hits and four walks over the next 4.1 innings. McCauley retired the only batter she faced in the seventh.
