Bears fall to No. 4 SLU

POTSDAM, N.Y.—A big second quarter propelled fourth-ranked St. Lawrence University (13-1) to a 15-5 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (9-4) on Tuesday evening. Senior attackman Jeremy Vautaur (Hampton, N.B./New Hampton School) scored a game-high six goals to lead the Saints. Five different Bears scored and sophomore midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) paced Potsdam with two assists. Senior captain Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made 17 saves for the Bears.
 
The Saints put tremendous pressure on the Bears' defense from the outset, firing 17 shots in the first quarter. However, thanks to seven saves from Gropp, Potsdam trailed just 2-0 after 15 minutes.
 
SLU took over the contest with nine second quarter markers, including four from Vautour. Senior midfielder Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior captain Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) each scored for the Bears in the second quarter. The Saints led 11-2 at the half.
 
Potsdam held SLU to just a goal in the third quarter, but were also held to a lone tally from senior midfielder Brian Martin (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). The Saints led 12-3 after 45 minutes.
 
Junior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal. With 3:57 remaining, Orsini found sophomore attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) in front of the net for Potsdam's final goal of the night. The Saints tacked on three in the lastl 15 minutes for the 15-5 final.
 
SLU senior goalie Ryan Fisher (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) made six saves to earn the win.
 
The Saints finished with a 14-9 advantage in faceoffs and went 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities.
 
After a difficult three-game stretch, the Bears look to bounce back in an important SUNYAC contest at Oswego State on Tuesday night. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
