POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (10-4, 5-1 SUNYAC) used a big second half to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (7-6, 3-3) for a 14-5 victory on Saturday. Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) had a goal and an assist. She now has 97 career points (81g, 16a), tying her for 10th place on the program's all-time scoring list with Jill Patterson '01. Newman is now also tied seventh place on the goals scored list with Jen Prevost '05.
The first half was a tight battle between the visitors and Potsdam. The teams' alternated the first six goals of the contest for a 3-3 tie with 17:20 to play. Freshman midfielder
Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) (24:03) got the Bears on the board and Cole scored twice (22:07, 17:20), the second a man-up goal to knot the score at three all. Newman notched her 50th of the season on free position to get Potsdam within 6-5 with 25:23 to play in the contest. However, the Blue Knights pulled away with four goals in the next five minutes. Their defense tightened up as well and Geneseo senior goalie Claudia Coleates (Stanley, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) made five saves in the second half. She recorded two stops on free position attemps. The Blue Knights then tacked on four more to close out the 14-5 victory.
Olschewske finished with 10 saves, while Coleates turned aside eight shots.
Geneseo outshot Potsdam 26-16 and edged the Bears 21-20 in ground balls, but Potsdam picked up 12 of 21 draw controls on the afternoon.
Newman (50g, 10a) and senior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immculate Heart) (18g, 42a) each have 60 points this season. They are the first Potsdam 60-point duo since Molly Lehman-Lewis '10 and Carly Richards '12 had 69 and 65 in 2009. Senior midfielder

The Bears have two regular season games remaining. One win or some help could deliver them the first playoff berth in program history.
Potsdam is back in action on Tuesday when the Bears host Oswego State at 4 p.m.
