Volleyball downs Mount Saint Vincent, falls to Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (9-1) closed out the Sage Tournament with a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent College (2-7) and a 3-0 loss at the hands of Union College (8-4). The loss ended Potsdam's nine-match win streak to open the season, but 9-0 is still the best start in program history.
 
The Bears rolled through the Dolphins by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-15. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) led Potsdam offensively with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Scott also had 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) contributed seven kills, an ace and two blocks. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) posted 28 assists, nine digs and two aces. Senior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) totaled 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) added three blocks and junior Megan Smith (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) had two.
 
Potsdam battled the host Dutchwomen closely in each set of the finale, but fell 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21. Scott and Tompkins each had a team-high 10 kills, while Topf chipped in five. Rodda completed another strong weekend with 27 assists and 12 digs. Scott also contributed 21 digs. Campbell posted 14 digs and Tompkins and Rodda also had two blocks.
 
The Bears open up their SUNYAC schedule next weekend when they host conference pool play at Maxcy Field House. Potsdam kicks things off with a 5 p.m. match against New Paltz on Friday.
