Spartans blank Bears in College Cup final, Pilgrims rout Mustangs for 3rd place

POTSDAM, N.Y.—D'Youville College sophomore forward Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) scored twice in 3:09 to lift the Spartans (2-0) to a 2-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-1) in the championship game of the Potsdam College Cup. In the consolation, senior forward Emily Gubbins (Westmoreland, N.Y./Westmoreland) had a goal and three assists as New England College (2-1) hammered Mount Ida College (0-3) 10-0. D'Youville sophomore goalie Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Bears controlled the play early in the contest, building a 7-1 advantage in shots, but were unable to get on the board. The game was slowed by tight defense later in the half and shots were difficult to come by. There was no score after 45 minutes.

Senior captain Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss) created two chances early in the second half, but Dulniak handled them. At the 53:31 mark, Spartan freshman forward Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Catholic) rang the crossbar with a shot from the right side. The ball deflected straight down and Potsdam senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) grabbed it before it crossed the goal line. Nearly 16 minutes later, Magee was fouled was awarded a direct kick just outside the box. She then drove the ball into the left corner of the net for the eventual game winner. In the 73rd minute, junior defender Breanne Nelson (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) sent a long pass ahead from the D'Youville half. Magee caught it in stride, got behind the defense and launched a high shot over Thibeau to make it 2-0. The Spartans played tight defense the rest of the way and closed out the victory.

Dulniak finished with nine saves and Thibeau stopped two shots.

The Bears outshot the D'Youville 16-10 and topped the Spartans 5-1 in corner kicks.

Juniors Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and Becca DeRubertis (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) were named to the all-tournament team, while Dulniak and senior defender Kailee Juzdowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) earned the honors for the Spartans.
